The Legacy of Thazhuthala & Perumkulam Ela
Thazhuthala village is in Kollam Taluk of Kollam District. This serene and calm village is two kilometers north of Kottiyam Junction, a fast developing town on NH 66 (former NH 47), ten kilometers south of Kollam city. It was part of the erstwhile Desinganadu Kingdom. Till the beginning of the century, the village was a self-sufficient agrarian society. The name Thazhuthala derived from 'thazathae' (towards the lower position) and 'ela' (vast expanse of paddy field). Thazhuthala lies towards the lower position of Perumkulam ela, which is the largest continuum of paddy fields in Central Travancore and the second largest in the state. Thazhuthala was also well known for its khadi weaving industry and is still famous for its rich Ayurveda tradition. Christian missionaries established schools and churches here by the end of the 19th century. Today, Thazhuthala is an educational hub and the holy abode of God with the Sree Mahaganapathi Temple, the shrine of St. Sebastian, and the Quadisiyya Islamic theology centre and mosque situated within a 200-meter radius, reflecting timeless communal harmony.
The Abode of Lord Vigneswara
Thazhuthala Sree Maha Ganapathi temple, the abode of Lord Vigneswara, is situated at Thazhuthala. The temple is celebrated for the great elephant procession known as 'Thazhuthala Gajothsavam', an event equivalent to Thrissur Pooram. Thousands of devotees flock to the lotus feet of Thazhuthala Sree Maha Ganapathy seeking eternal salvation from the bonds of Karma and solace from the evils of Kaliyuga. According to local narrative, five decades ago on a fine morning, the idol of Lord Ganesha was found beneath the huge banyan tree near the Desa Seva Samajam Library and SNDP Shaga Mandiram. People gathered and constructed a small sanctum to place the idol. Later it was learnt that it was the handiwork of Sri. Paramu Panikkar, an esteemed railway employee who was gifted the idol by his senior officer. Following a holy Devaprasnam that revealed the immense spiritual power residing there, villagers irrespective of religion, caste, and creed united to build a consecrated shrine. In the year 2000, at the dawn of the new millennium, a grand Mahapuja was performed and Lord Vinayaka was consecrated in the sanctum sanctorum.
വിഘ്‌നങ്ങള്‍ അകറ്റുന്ന തഴുത്തല ശ്രീ മഹാഗണപതി
കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയില്‍ തഴുത്തല വില്ലേജിൽ കൊട്ടിയം തഴുത്തലയിലാണ് സര്‍വ്വാഭീഷ്ടവരദായകനും ക്ഷിപ്രപ്രസാദിയുമായ തഴുത്തല ശ്രീ മഹാഗണപതി ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. പഴയ തലമുറയില്‍പ്പെട്ട ഒരാള്‍ക്ക് നിയോഗം പോലെ ഒരു ഗണപതി വിഗ്രഹം ലഭിക്കുകയും അദ്ദേഹം അത് തഴുത്തല ഗുരുമന്ദിരത്തിനു സമീപമുള്ള അരയാൽ ചുവട്ടിൽ വച്ചു.
മൂര്‍ത്തിത്രയം കുടികൊള്ളുന്ന അരയാലില്‍ നിന്നും ചൈതന്യം ഉള്‍ക്കൊണ്ട വിഗ്രഹം ശക്തിപ്രാപിച്ചു. ഇത് തിരിച്ചറിയാന്‍ വൈകിയ ജനങ്ങള്‍ അടിയ്ക്കടി നാടിനുണ്ടാകുന്ന ദോഷങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചറിയാൻ പ്രശ്നം വച്ചുനോക്കി. അരയാൽ ചുവട്ടിലെ വിഗ്രഹത്തിന്റെ ചൈതന്യം മനസ്സിലാക്കിയപ്പോള്‍ അവിടെയൊരു ക്ഷേത്രം നിര്‍മ്മിച്ചു. വിഘ്ന വിനായകനായ ഗണപതി ഭഗവാനെ അവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കുകയും അതിനുശേഷം ആ ദേശത്തിനും ദേശവാസികള്‍ക്കും ഐശ്വര്യവും സമാധാനവും പൂര്‍വാധികം വര്‍ധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു എന്നാണ് പറയപ്പെടുന്നത്.
മകരമാസത്തിലെ അവിട്ടം നാളിലാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഉത്സവം. പത്തു ദിവസത്തെ ഉത്സവം ജാതിമത ഭേദമന്യേ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. പത്താം നാൾ രാവിലെയുള്ള ആനനീരാട്ടും ആനയൂട്ടും ചമയപ്രദര്‍ശനങ്ങളും വൈകുന്നേരം നടക്കുന്ന ഗജോത്സവത്തിലും തുടര്‍ന്നുള്ള കെട്ടുകാഴ്ചയും എഴുന്നള്ളത്തും കാണുന്നതിനായി വിദേശികളടക്കം ആയിരക്കണക്കിനാളുകൾ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നു. ഉത്സവ കൊടിയേറ്റത്തിനുള്ള അടയ്ക്കാമരവും (കവുങ്ങ്) വഹിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുള്ള കൊടിമരഘോഷയാത്രയില്‍ ആവേശപൂര്‍വമായിട്ടാണ് ഭക്തജനങ്ങള്‍ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നത്. ഓരോ വര്‍ഷവും ഓരോദിക്കില്‍ നിന്നും ഇത് ആരംഭിക്കുന്നു.
ചിങ്ങമാസത്തിലെ വിനായക ചതുര്‍ത്ഥി, കന്നിയിലെ ദുര്‍ഗ്ഗാഷ്ടമി, വിദ്യാരംഭം, തുലാമാസ ആയില്യ പൂജ, നാല്‍പത്തിയൊന്നു ദിവസത്തെ മണ്ഡലച്ചിറപ്പ്, തൃക്കാര്‍ത്തിക, ധനുമാസത്തിലെ നാല്‍പത്തിയൊന്ന് വിളക്ക് ഇവ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ വിശേഷ ദിവസങ്ങളാണ്. ക്ഷേത്ര മതില്‍ക്കെട്ടിനകത്തെ അരയാൽമരവും അതിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന നാഗദൈവങ്ങളും, ഭദ്രകാളിയുമാണ് ഉപദേവതകള്‍. രാവിലെ 5 മണിക്ക് തുറക്കുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രം മധ്യാഹ്ന പൂജയോടെ 10.30 നു അടയ്ക്കുകയും വൈകിട്ട് 5.00 നു തുറന്ന് 7.30 നുള്ള അത്താഴപൂജയോടുകൂടി 8 മണിക്ക് അടയ്ക്കുന്നു. ലഡ്ഡു, ഉണ്ണിയപ്പം, മോദകം, പായസം എന്നിവയാണ് പ്രധാന വഴിപാടുകള്‍.
സര്‍വ്വവിഘ്ന നിവാരണപൂജ
എല്ലാ മലയാളമാസവും ആദ്യത്തെ ഞായറാഴ്ച രാവിലെ 9 മണിമുതല്‍ നടത്തുന്ന സര്‍വ്വവിഘ്ന നിവാരണപൂജ ഇവിടുത്തെ പ്രത്യേകതയാണ്. തഴുത്തല ശ്രീമഹാഗണപതിയെ ആരാധിച്ചാല്‍ സിദ്ധിയും ബുദ്ധിയും കൂടുതല്‍ പ്രകാശിതമാകുമെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം.
